Diario al Día | Nueva York, Estados Unidos — Adonis Jarvis, un adolescente de 16 años con autismo, falleció el 19 de marzo en un hospital del Bronx, donde agentes y autoridades iniciaron una investigación luego de que se detectaran signos de una condición extrema de desnutrición.
El caso llevó al arresto de su madre y su abuela, quienes enfrentan cargos relacionados con el fallecimiento del joven y permanecen bajo custodia judicial.
Las autoridades informaron que Adonis Jarvis fue trasladado al centro médico del Bronx, donde los especialistas identificaron señales que generaron preocupación sobre su estado físico.
Posteriormente, el médico forense determinó que el fallecimiento correspondió a un caso en el que se privó la vida del jovencito, según la información entregada durante la investigación.
El jueves, las autoridades arrestaron a Geneva Jarvis, de 36 años, madre del adolescente, y a Denise Jarvis, de 62 años, su abuela.
Ambas fueron presentadas ante un juez durante la tarde de ese mismo día y quedaron detenidas sin derecho a fianza mientras continúa el proceso judicial.
De acuerdo con los datos obtenidos por las autoridades, la evaluación forense estableció que el adolescente falleció por una falta extrema de alimentación.
Fuentes citadas en la investigación indicaron que el joven pesaba aproximadamente 27 kilos al momento de su fallecimiento.
La investigación también alcanzó al hermano gemelo de Adonis Jarvis. Según las autoridades, el otro adolescente fue ingresado en un hospital debido a una condición de desnutrición, aunque logró sobrevivir.
Los investigadores señalaron que ambos jóvenes no tenían capacidad para hablar, una circunstancia que formó parte de la revisión del caso.
La policía explicó que, al llegar al hospital, los dos adolescentes presentaban señales de abandono prolongado, falta extrema de alimentación y deshidratación. Además, indicaron que tenían lesiones en las piernas y en distintas zonas del cuerpo.
La familia residía en un apartamento ubicado en un tercer piso de un edificio sin ascensor en East 147th Street, en el Bronx.
Vecinos y trabajadores del inmueble fueron consultados durante la investigación para conocer detalles sobre la situación que rodeaba a la familia.
El conserje del edificio declaró a Eyewitness News que el apartamento se encontraba en condiciones que describió como sucias e inhabitables.
El encargado afirmó: "Está lleno de basura y ropa tirada por todas partes. Le dije que quería entrar al apartamento para arreglarlo, pero ella seguía diciendo 'Vale, mañana' y nunca nos dejó entrar".
Otros residentes del edificio indicaron que nunca observaron situaciones que consideraran sospechosas, aunque describieron a la familia como personas reservadas y con poca interacción con quienes vivían alrededor.
